According to a recent article in the Sunday Times, banks are investing big bucks in digital. This is in order to keep their existing clients and also to woo new ones. ABSA recently launched ChatBanking on Facebook Messenger. Nedbank’s Money App has been downloaded more than a million times and they added 42 new services to their app this year. FNB has been leading the digital revolution with a number of services on its app and winning awards for its innovations. Its most recent offering, allowing some-one to open a bank account with a selfie is ground-breaking indeed.

Standard Bank has chosen to partner with WeChat, China’s biggest internet-based messaging platform (and also part of the Media24 offering ). What intrigued me most when reading the article was ABSA’s recent launch of its ChatBanking on WhatsApp. It is great writing an article about something one has read, even better so to test it first. As I am an ABSA client (in my personal capacity) I immediately set forth to test this new application. The set-up and activation was extremely simple and quick and not to mention secure and seamless.

Once I created a contact for ABSA and then sent a simple “hi” message, I was sent a notification to my ABSA mobile app ( which I had been using for a while now). Within the app, I then approved the WhatsApp set-up and that was it. I can now see my bank balance, see transactions, buy airtime, data and sms bundles, make payments, buy electricity and even get a mini credit report. I can do any of these by simply typing “menu” or the shortcuts, listed from 1 to 11.

It really is so simple, yet so great and will make a difference to the way I bank, for sure. See the full ABSA story here:
